I support writers for a living. Occasionally I will pause our regularly scheduled programming to tell you about it!
In 2024, I started a Writers’ Salon at the bookstore. Our first meeting topic: how to begin. Open to anyone, no registration required. One hour of sitting in a circle and talking about writing.
I had low expectations, to be honest. It wasn’t a class, or a place to share writing. No one was going to receive feedback or be held accountable for anything. I wasn’t sure if anyone else would see the value in sitting in a room with other writers and just…talking.
But I was bound and determined to offer it, for three reasons:
What I most enjoyed about writing classes and groups was being in community with other writers, and I wanted more of that.
I find myself so interested in the experiences of writers who are doing what I’m doing, but also those who are doing something completely different. I love talking to newer writers, but I also love hearing from people with more experience than me. Most classes and writing groups are quite homogenous; this would be a chance to bring a variety of writers together.
Frankly, I wanted it for myself. I figured that if one other person came, we’d have a great conversation!
And so I threw it on the bookstore schedule, announced it in the newsletter, and crossed my fingers.
More than 20 people came to the first meeting. They wanted it, too.
The Writer’s Salon is something that people continuously thank me for, but I always thank them right back. Though I serve as the facilitator, I’m a participant just like them. I’ve made new friends, been inspired, and gotten new ideas for both craft and practice.
It is literally the best thing I did for my writing life in 2024.
So I’ve decided to bring it to you.
